House Rules
The purpose of the House Rules is to ensure all of our visitors are able to have a high-quality and safe visit to Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance. The rules are therefore binding for all visitors.
- Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance has many roles, including that of being a memorial and cemetery. As a matter of course, therefore, visitors should wear appropriate clothing and behave respectfully. In particular, they should avoid making noise or running.
- Parents, guardians, teachers or other adults are responsible for the children or young people under their care and should ensure that they behave appropriately. This responsibility remains with these accompanying adults even during events led by the educational staff.
- The recommended minimum age for a visit to the Memorial is 14; the recommended minimum age for a visit to the exhibition is 10.
- Visitors are asked to keep the entrances and passageways clear and to be considerate to other groups and individual visitors.
- Hartheim Castle is a historic building and therefore has areas that do not meet modern construction standards. It is therefore important to take care and pay attention, particularly when using the staircases (steep, narrow steps, slippery surfaces).
- Smoking is prohibited throughout the building.
- Eating is not allowed in the exhibition, and neither eating nor drinking is permitted in the rooms of the memorial area.
- In general we ask visitors to treat the rooms and the objects in them with the greatest possible care. Please avoid causing dirt or damage. We will prosecute in the event of intentional damage.
- It is not permitted to make telephone calls with mobile phones in the exhibition or Memorial, except in emergencies.
- You are not allowed to bring pets into Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance. This does not include assistance dogs for people with disabilities.
- Filming and photography for commercial purposes are only allowed with the authorisation of the management of Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance.
- The display of far-right or neo-Nazi views in any way, e.g. slogans, gestures, clothing, is prohibited throughout the building and grounds of Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance. Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance reserves the right to exclude or expel people who behave in such a way from its educational activities.
- You are not permitted to bring in or use vehicles of any kind throughout the building and cemetery site. This does not include mobility aids for people with disabilities.
- The whole of Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance is fully accessible for people who use wheelchairs. For people with reduced mobility, a wheelchair is available for use at any time during their visit. It can be borrowed free of charge from the shop or cash desk.
- Instructions given by the staff should always be followed.
- If the acoustic alarm sounds, you should leave the building quickly but calmly via the labelled escape routes, while following any instructions from the staff.
