Founding and Organs

In December 2004 the Upper Austrian state government passed a resolution for the founding of the charitable foundation “Lern- und Gedenkort Schloss Hartheim” (Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance). The purpose of the foundation (in accordance with the Upper Austrian Foundation and Fund Act, LGBl. 31/1988) is to financially safeguard the work of Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance. Hartheim Castle – Place for Learning and Remembrance is operated by the Hartheim Castle Society.

The Board of Trustees is the foundation’s oversight body and is appointed by the assembly of trustees. In turn, the Board appoints the managing director of the foundation, decides on the agenda and articles of association and is empowered to dissolve the foundation. In addition to its director, the Board of Trustees comprises six representatives of the parties in the Upper Austrian state parliament – at least one representative of each party – plus two representatives of the Hartheim Castle Society and 15 other members drawn from religious communities and universities. The state governor acts as chairperson.

The legal founding took place on 28 December 2004 with the resolution of the supervisory body of the State of Upper Austria, trade department (file no. Wi(Ge)-830094/4-2004Myh/Ti) and was officially presented to the public on 14 June 2005 in Hartheim Castle during the opening ceremony.
