The first "Fremdvölkische Kinderheim" of the German Reich was housed in an inn in Spital am Pyhrn. Newborns and small children by forced laborers wer kept in such facilities, and many of the children died due to the completely inadequate care. The home in Spital was to be followed by hundreds of others in the German Reich, some of them in the "Gau Oberdonau". It can be assumed that thousands of children died in these homes. A project group based at the Memorial Site Hartheim Castle is currently researching the history of the "Fremdvölkische Kinderheime" in the "Gau Oberdonau".  A publication with the results of the research is expected to appear in 2022.

A report on the commemoration ceremony can also be found here.
