Note on Descriptions of Institutions

'Die Irrenpflege in Österreich in Wort und Bild' (The Care for the Lunatics in Austria in Words and Pictures)
"Die Irrenpflege in Österreich in Wort und Bild" (The Care for the Lunatics in Austria in Words and Pictures)

The history of single hospitals or sanatoriums in the "Reichsgau Sudentenland" (Sudeten Area) and the "Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren" (Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia) are almost completey unkown. There is no current German literature on the history of medical or care institutions in the post NS-era. Therefore, the following information on character and size of such institutions was put together. It is based on historical publications and archive material.
Readers, who are searching for data on former patients or persons who died in an institution should contact the respective present hospitals. (Contact information has been added to the list, if available.) Often, historic registers which contain the relevant information are available there. If that is not the case, they at least should be able to tell at which archives the registers can be obtained.

Most of the descriptions of the following medical and care institutions were taken from the book "Die Irrenpflege in Österreich in Wort und Bild" (The Care for the Lunatics in Words and Pictures), published in 1912 in Halle/Saale (Germany). Other sources, like the "Abschlussbericht über Planung 'Sudetenland'" (Closing Report on Project Sudeten Area) from August 4-13, 1942, were taken from the Bundesarchiv Berlin (Federal Archive Berlin).

A table containing more institutions is also based on Federal Archive Berlin file R 96 I.
