Images of the disabled in the media and in public often do not correspond to how these people view themselves. In particular, major donation campaigns aimed at contributing to the improvement of the situation of individual people with disabilities and promoting working groups and support projects have created an image at times dominated by helplessness and dependency. Critics of this image demand moving away from an orientation on the weaknesses in favour of presenting the strengths of people with disabilities and their contribution to society.
