Gesture Payments

Children of victims of the Nazi euthanasia programme have a right to a symbolic payment (gesture payment) in both Austria and Germany. The process of applying for this gesture payment is handled differently in the two countries.

In Austria, the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism was established in 1995 in order to express the special responsibility borne by the Republic of Austria vis-à-vis the victims of National Socialism. The National Fund holds a seat in Parliament in Vienna. Application forms are available for download on the website of the National Fund: http://de.nationalfonds.org. There is no deadline for submitting applications.

There is no central authority in Germany to which relatives of victims can refer. Provision of the gesture payment depends on regional criteria. Since 1987, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bund der "Euthanasie"-Geschädigten und Zwangssterilisierten (Association of Victims of "Euthanasia" and Forced Sterilisation Working Group), formerly Bund der "Euthanasie"-Geschädigten und Zwangssterilisierten, has provided support for relatives who would like to apply for the gesture payment. Further information can be found on the website of this voluntary working group: http://www.euthanasiegeschaedigte-zwangssterilisierte.de/. There is no deadline for submitting applications.
